Resurrection

Well, the broadband is back. Let's just hope it stays.

Fragile Balance

To those who have asked (all one of you), yes this site currently looks a bit... "b0rked" in Mozilla Firefox 1.5 Beta 2 and recent nightlies. That would be Mozilla bug 311146 (scroll this page up and down to see the pretty effect).

Update: fixed as of nightly build 2005102105.

Fallen

As of last Sunday I have ADSL broadband! Actually I should say "as of last Sunday I had ADSL broadband". Yes once again the competency of British Telecom shines through like a candle behind a concrete wall as our ADSL connection died at about 12.30 today.

A swift¹ call to BT's extremely helpful² technical support line soon sorted things though. Yes, we have been issued a fault reference number and the problem will be looked at in the next 48 hours (if we don't hear anything back after that time, we call them again quoting the reference number).

Fortunately we hadn't cancelled our current satellite service yet, so it's back to 1000ms pings for now which I do so love³.

  1. If you don't count the time navigating the India-based call centre
  2. This is a lie
  3. This too is a lie

Victory

It's so satisfying to win a game. Even more so a team game.

The fact that the game in question is played online rather than in real life is irrelevant (and I do play team sports in real life too - Laggan Cricket Club for example who incidentally won a couple of games recently).

I am of course talking about World of Warcraft, a mighty fine "massively-multiplayer" online role-playing game that has been taking up a fair bit of my free time recently.

Tonight a team of 40 people from our guild (the Deeprun Pest Control) defeated one of the most infamous bosses in the game: Ragnaros, the great fire elemental who rules over the Molten Core.

He's quite big.

And pretty hard.

But after hundreds of combined hours of preparation, strategizing, getting the right equipment, several practices and considerable frustration, we finally defeated him!

As we got him closer and closer to defeat, I have to say my heart was seriously pounding - I don't think I've ever got quite such an adrenaline rush from a computer game!

Here's the proud team who made it all happen:
