Well at least that's how WindowsUpdate used to be. Apparently it now does send information, and more than it really needs to:

Update: Slashdot apparently didn't read the whole article (well neither did I - pay for news? - but I'd have expected them to). As Shacknews reports, no information about other programs installed on your computer is actually sent to Microsoft. The article merely stated that it was possible for the update client to send such details if they wanted it to.
