Counterpoint

Aftenposten, one of the national newspapers here in Norway just published an article (in Norwegian only - sorry) on the extremely loud construction noise going on just outside the Opera Software offices.

Ah yes "the noise"; I should probably back up a bit…

Across the road from the Opera Software offices, some construction work is going on. This work involves driving big steel piles into the ground. The tool they are using to do this is not a traditional pile driver, it is instead a vibratory hammer. In theory it should not be as loud as a pile driver, but it is still very loud and (unlike a pile driver) a constant noise.

We have now been provided with ear muffs at work which do make things considerably less unpleasant, but it can still be hard to get work done while the noise is going.

It's hard to describe how bad the noise is, but you too can experience it thanks to the video that accompanies the article. Watch, turn up the volume, listen and enjoy, and try not to pay too much attention to the person who's trying really hard (and failing) to look like he's doing work while the camera's trained on him (yes, that would be me).

Oh, and in completely unrelated news, it's my birthday today!

UPDATE: Article now available in English.
